What is the CAE test like?
The test has five sections:
Reading – 75 minutes
1. part 1 – 3 themed texts with multiple choice questions
2. part 2 – text with paragraphs missing
3. part 3 – text with multiple choice questions
4. part 4 – multiple matching
Writing – 2 or 3 tasks , 120 minutes
English in Use – 5 tasks with 50 questions – 60 minutes –
1. part 1- gapped text with multiple choice
2. part 2 – gapped text
3. part 3 – word formation
4. part 4 – gapped sentences
5. part 5 – key word transformations
Listening – 40 minutes, 30 questions
1. part 1 – short extracts
2. part 2 – sentence completion
3. part 3 – multiple choice
4. part 4 – multiple matching
Speaking – interview, normally with another candidate, 15 minutes
